The best fit connects your actual carrier agreements, eligible rate options, shipment workflow and cost-analysis needs. Shortlist products using demonstrated requirements rather than a universal winner.
A useful TMS shortlist starts with the shipments you move and the decisions your team makes. Write down the modes, locations, carrier relationships and systems involved. Then identify the bottleneck: collecting prices, selecting service, tendering freight, handling exceptions or explaining costs.
Match the product to the operation
Vendor names can hide different products and modules. Descartes describes Transportation Manager for medium- and high-volume shippers. FreightWise now offers Kuebix AI for SMB and mid-market shippers. MercuryGate’s current name is Infios Transportation Management. Confirm the actual edition in the proposal, including its rollout status. Sources: Descartes, FreightWise launch, Infios.
Bring a representative shipment set
Prepare ordinary shipments and difficult ones: a recurring LTL lane, a new lane, a liftgate delivery, a shipment near a class or weight boundary, and a time-sensitive move. Use the same inputs with every vendor. Record what is automated, what requires configuration and what still happens by email.
Evaluate the complete handoff
Follow one shipment from quote to carrier selection, documents, pickup, tracking and invoice reconciliation. Ask who owns a missed pickup, incorrect freight detail or disputed charge. Have the people who perform the work attend the demonstration.
Price the implementation as well as the software
Request a written scope covering users, sites, shipment volume, integrations, historical data, training, support and optional modules. Identify who maintains carrier connections and business rules. Compare a realistic operating cost over your chosen evaluation period rather than the subscription alone.
Make the decision reviewable
Keep a short acceptance sheet: requirement, demonstration evidence, edition, dependency, owner and unresolved question. Treat a public feature statement as a lead to verify. The strongest shortlist is the one your team can explain using its own freight and operating constraints.
